The North York Women’s Shelter presents Motherland: Tales of Wonder

NYWS is excited to host our first (virtual) event of 2022! On Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 5PM, we will be hosting and moderating a critical discussion about parenthood with the documentary film Motherland: Tales of Wonder.
The event will feature esteemed and diverse panelists including the director of Motherland, Helene Klodawsky, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Toronto, Mohini Datta-Ray, a scholar and birth worker from Ocama Collective, Hirut Melaku, and our very own Director of Programs and Services, Brigitte Barikage. We’ll also be giving an opportunity to our audience members to send questions to the panel prior to the event.
Gender roles, bodily autonomy and sovereignty, and parenthood are all subjects critical to the cultural dialogue right now- especially with the threat of the potential reversal of the when the rights of anyone and everyone with a uterus are under attack with the possible reversal of the Roe v. Wade ruling. This phenomenon of exercising power over our bodies by deeming it fair under the guise of saving “lives” is deeply misogynistic and patriarchal in nature. It is reflective of a history of anti-feminism that seeks to have an opinion on and control over women and gender diverse folks. We believe it is integral to have discussions about parenthood, gender roles in a sociocultural and political context- now.
