WHAI Virtual Lunch & Learn – Integrating Afrocentric Praxis in IPV and HIV Care for ACB Women: Navigating Disclosure and Access to Services

Lunch and Learn - Sept 25 2024

On September 25th 2024, WHAI hosted a Virtual Lunch & Learn that focused on a study led by Watetu Gichuki alongside Chris Leonard and Denise Johnson, examining the intersection of intimate partner violence (IPV) and HIV among African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) women in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Through thematic analysis of Talking Circles and interviews, this project identifies key barriers ACB women face in accessing services, including systemic obstacles, fear of stigmatization, and the impact of the “Strong Black Woman” schema. The research underscores the importance of Afrocentric praxis in providing culturally informed, inclusive support. Emphasizing community engagement and spirituality, the study advocates for integrating Afrocentric values into care to effectively address the unique challenges of IPV and HIV among ACB women.

While this project focusses on communities in the GTA, the findings, practices and approaches provide valuable learnings and approaches that can be drawn on through WHAI work across Ontario.
