This webinar was co-hosted by the Canadian Research Initiative In Substance Matters (CRISM) and the Canadian Perinatal Opioid Project (CPOP) on Thursday March 26th from 11:00AM – 12:30PM EST. It aimed to raise awareness of the growing crisis of fatal and non-fatal opioid overdose and toxicity among pregnant and newly parenting people in Ontario, and to strengthen coordinated community responses. Between 2015 and 2020, fatal opioid toxicity rates among this population increased by 160%, while non-fatal opioid poisonings increased by 220% between 2013 and 2020. This session presented key findings from the Pregnancy, Opioid Toxicity & Death factsheet, and introduce the newly developed Canadian Perinatal Opioid Project Dashboard and storytelling tool. The webinar included a panel discussion examining drivers of these trends and identifying strategies to better support pregnant and parenting people and inform policy and practice.
